TalesKids is a free library of bedtime stories for kids ages 3 to 8. Every story is short enough to read aloud in a few minutes, gentle enough for the last moments before sleep, and built around one simple lesson a child can carry into tomorrow.

We write for the grown-up holding the book as much as for the child listening. That is why each story comes with an age range, a reading time, character voices, and a few questions to talk about afterward.

TalesKids is an independent website owned and operated by Adnan. There are no accounts to create and nothing to buy. Just open a story and start reading.

What You’ll Find Here

Fairy Tales

Classic tales told in a new, gentle way, with fresh characters and softer endings for bedtime. Try Goldilocks and the Just-Right Garden.

Animal Stories

Original stories about forest friends, sea creatures, and backyard animals facing the same feelings kids do, like sharing, patience, and being brave. Try Pip the Penguin’s First Snow.

Gentle Scary Stories

Playful “spooky” stories where the creak, the knock, or the glowing eyes always turn out to be something friendly. Try The Creaking Stair.

How We Write Our Stories

Every story on TalesKids goes through the same five steps before it is published.

  1. A real childhood moment. Each story starts from something children actually face, like a new sibling, fear of the dark, or not wanting to share.
  2. Drafting and editing. The story is written, then edited by hand for short sentences, real dialogue, and a calm, sleepy ending.
  3. Age check. We set a specific age range and adjust words and length to match it.
  4. Safety review. We remove anything violent, frightening, or confusing. “Scary” stories stay playful, never unsettling.
  5. Read-aloud check. Each story is read out loud to test pacing, then we add voice tips, discussion questions, and activities for parents.

Fairy tale retellings are always original rewrites with new characters and dialogue, never copies of an existing version. When we spot a mistake or a story that can be better, we update it.

Our Story Standards

  • Every story shows a specific age range, so you know it fits your child.
  • No violence, no mean-spirited humor, and no lessons delivered through punishment.
  • Characters make mistakes and fix them with kindness, honesty, or help from a friend.
  • Every story ends calmly, so it works as the last thing your child hears before sleep.
  • Parent tips link to trusted organizations like Reading Rockets, the Child Mind Institute, and HealthyChildren.org from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
