Meet the Characters

Rowan

A sweet young red panda with soft velvet paws and a long, striped tail. Rowan loves exploring during the day, but sometimes finds it hard to quiet his busy mind at night.

Elder Willow

A wise and gentle ancient tree whose leaves rustle with the softest sound in the forest. Elder Willow shelters all the small creatures of the woods and knows the secret to restful sleep.

The Story Whispering Tree

The sun was slowly sinking below the mountaintops, painting the evening sky in soft shades of lavender, rose, and pale gold. All across the Silverleaf Meadow, the daytime birds were tucking their heads beneath their wings, and the little woodland flowers were gently closing their petals for the night.

Every creature in the forest was preparing to sleep, except for Rowan.

Rowan was a small red panda with very fluffy ears and a tail ringed in soft russet stripes. He had spent the entire afternoon tumbling through piles of crisp leaves, chasing blue butterflies, and balancing on mossy logs. His little paws were tired, but his head was still filled with busy thoughts about all the things he wanted to do tomorrow.

Rowan lay down on a cushion of green moss, but he turned to the left. He turned to the right. He twitched his tail. His eyes stayed wide open, gazing up at the first twinkling star of the evening.

“My thoughts are spinning like windblown leaves,” Rowan whispered softly to himself. “I am tired, but my mind will not sit still.”

A gentle breeze rustled through the tall grass. It made a quiet sound: Shhh-wisshh… shhh-wisshh…

Rowan sat up and looked toward the center of the meadow. Standing tall and proud on a small grassy knoll was Elder Willow, the great Whispering Tree. Elder Willow was the oldest tree in the valley, with long, weeping branches that swayed gracefully in the evening air like soft silk ribbons.

Taking small, slow steps, Rowan walked across the cool grass toward the tree. The grass felt damp and refreshing against his paws. When he reached the trunk, he leaned his shoulder against the smooth bark.

“Good evening, little one,” whispered Elder Willow. The voice was deep and warm, like the quiet hum of a gentle summer breeze. “Why are you wandering while the moon rises?”

“I want to sleep,” Rowan murmured, resting his chin on his paws. “But my mind is still running through the forest.”

Elder Willow swayed softly, letting a few leaves flutter down like gentle green feathers. “To rest your mind, Rowan, you must listen to the forest. Breathe in the cool night air, and let the quiet sounds carry your thoughts away.”

Rowan closed his eyes. He took a deep breath in through his nose, smelling the sweet scent of pine needles and damp earth. In, two, three… and out, two, three…

“What do you hear, Rowan?” asked Elder Willow quietly.

Rowan listened carefully. High above, the leaves of the Whispering Tree brushed together in the soft wind. Shhh-fall… shhh-fall…

“I hear the leaves,” Rowan whispered.

“That is the forest breathing,” Elder Willow said softly. “When the leaves sway, they are letting go of the sunshine from the day. You can let go of your day, too.”

Rowan took another long, slow breath. He imagined his busy thoughts floating up into the dark sky, turning into quiet little clouds that drifted far over the hills. With every breath, his shoulders relaxed a little more. His tail lay still on the soft earth.

Down near his paws, a tiny cricket sang a single, gentle note: Chirp… chirp…

A sleepy breeze swept across the meadow, whispering through the branches of the Whispering Tree: Sleep now… soft dreams… sleep now…

Rowan curled his body into a neat, round circle between two big, mossy roots of the tree. The roots cradled him like a cozy wooden nest. He pulled his warm, bushy tail up over his nose, resting his cheek on the soft fur.

The canopy above filtered the moonlight, casting quiet patterns of silver and shadow over his sleeping place. The air was cool and still. Rowan felt warm, safe, and deeply peaceful.

Elder Willow gently lowered long, leafy branches around the little red panda, protecting him from the night air. The tree whispered its softest song into the quiet dark: Rest your head, close your eyes, under starry velvet skies…

Rowan let out a long, sleepy sigh. His eyelids grew heavy, and his breathing became slow and steady. Surrounded by the gentle sounds of the night, Rowan drifted into a deep, peaceful sleep.
